Low voters turnout in Ekiti rerun

The supplementary election in 20 polling units in Ilejemeje State Constituency in Ekiti State, was characterised by low voters’ turnout on Saturday. 

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission cancelled the state assembly election in the 20 polling units in the constituency due to violation of electoral law during the April 11 election.

The commission later ordered supplementary elections in the affected polling units on April 25.

As of 8.30am, most of the polling units visited at Ward 06 Iye 3, few voters were in queue for accreditation.

NAN also reports that the situation was the same at PU 007 Imose-Ise, Owakuta PU 003 and Ise PU 006.

The process was however peaceful as the voters that participated in the election at the affected polling units in Iludun, Obada and Iye conducted themselves in peaceful manner during accreditation.

Voting materials arrived as early as 7am and accreditation commenced at exactly 8a.m. At exactly 10:30am, 55 out of 139 registered voters have been accredited at PU 001 General Hospital, Iye.

INEC ad hoc workers in all the units visited was waiting for eligible registered voters to come out for the exercise. Party agents of the two major political parties, the All Progressive Congress and the People Democratic Party were seen in all the polling units visited.

The restriction of movement was strictly obeyed as security operatives patrolled the areas to maintain peace and order while some security officers manned each of the affected polling units.
