Governors serving under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday
night in a crucial meeting that stretched from 7.30pm to 10.55pm
insisted that their party remained one to beat as the nation gears up
for next year’s general elections.
The parley, earlier scheduled for
6pm, only stated around 7.30pm when the Chairman of PDP Governors’
Forum, Chief Godswill Akpabio arrived.
The Chairman of PDP
Governors’ Forum, who addressed newsmen immediately after the meeting,
said the governors reviewed the state of PDP and expressed confidence
that their party remains the only national party and indeed the party to
beat in the 2015 general elections.
Akpabio, who governs Akwa
Ibom State, explained the absence of some of their members, blaming it
on flight problems caused by bad weather. It was learnt that Governors
Lamido, Dankwambo, Suswan, Uduaghan were among those who could not make
it to the meeting. Other governors who were absent include: Martin
Elechi, Sullivan Chime and Ayo Fayose of Ebonyi, Enugu and Ekiti
respectively.
The Akwa Ibom governor continued that the meeting
was crucial because it was strategic for the election as it enabled the
governors to strategise. The meeting, which was held at the Akwa
Ibom State governor’s lodge, Abuja, it was gathered, was to address the
fallout of the just concluded PDP primaries across the states. The
party has been emeshed in controversies after its primaries election
and this has seen members of the party defecting to other political
parties.
The governors who attended the meeting were that of Bauchi, Abia, Kebbi, Ondo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Niger States. Others were, Taraba (acting), Bayelsa, Plateau, Kaduna (deputy), Kogi (deputy), Katsina (deputy) and Sokoto (deputy).
